If you are new to social media, you may wonder about the Popular Hashtags. We see them everywhere: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google+, Pinterest and Tumblr. But what are they going to do? Why do they seem so random? Who is going to use them? No wonder all of this seems so confusing! That is why I gave you some tips for understanding what hashtags are and how to use them strategically in your business.

Popular Hashtags

What are Popular Hashtags?

Generally, a hashtag helps people find things and share things. They are like an organizational tool for social networks. As long as those posts don't use the same hashtag they are looking for, people will find it easier to find posts on a specific topic.

A hashtag containing the words given before the keyboard hashtag: #. One or more words can be used if there is no space between the hashtag and keywords. Once added to a social media post, the hashtag phrase is searchable and clickable.

For example, M&M has released the new Pumpkin Spice Flavor Candy for Fall. Starbucks is also promoting its pumpkin spice latte. If you go to Twitter and type a hashtag called PumpkinsPiece in the search function, this and other posts related to pumpkin spice will open.

Why use hashtags?

Hashtags are a great way to get your business more functional when done strategically and appropriately. Some examples are:

Knowing popular hashtags for your industry and including them in your posts can drive traffic to your blog or website.
Searching hashtags can help you research content, track your competition, and find great content.
Adding a hashtag allows you, your business, your products to identify you and your identity.
Promoting a special event hashtag for the live event will benefit the community in your attendees and followers.
And some hashtags are just used for fun or for the point. My favorite is #ChatalogIsSacred and I've used it more than once!

Read below about strategic ways to use hashtags in your business.

When hashtags were first created?

On June 1, 2009, Twitter created its own hashtag features. All Twitter hashtags (with the words in front of them #) become hyperlinks to search for more tweets of that topic.

Other social networks, such as Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, Tumbler, and Instagram, soon followed in 2013. While some networks, such as Google+ and Instagram, have adopted the hashtag in anger, Facebook is still lagging behind using this feature in common use.

In fact, a long time ago I did a very informal poll on the use of hashtags on Facebook and many people did not know what they were, others thought they were spam and messed up their newsfeed and most did not click on them. In fact, the only people who use the hashtag are marketers or social media managers!

But this does not mean they should not be used… There are many reasons to include them in your social media strategy when you look at them.

Rules for using hashtags.

Different platforms have different official and "unwritten" rules on the use of hashtags.
The sentence doesn't matter, but you can use it to improve your reading ability: #SecretStarbucksMenu.
You cannot use special characters such as hyphens, asterisks, etc.
Don't spam yourself. There are certainly three or fewer hashtags. Use too much and be considered a spam hashtag.
Prevent sending your Twitter or Instagram posts to Facebook automatically when you use too many hashtags. This is a real deal for those on Facebook.
Research the hashtag before use. You can use an existing hashtag for anything you don't want to add or attract.
